A doctor's registration number is checked against the State Medical Council that issued it and against the National Medical Commission's records. The register is public, and the check confirms the number is real, current, and belongs to the named doctor.
Every doctor practising modern medicine in India is registered with a State Medical Council, which issues a registration number. The National Medical Commission maintains national records drawn from those councils. Both are public: the point of a register is that anybody can check it.
A registration number on its own proves nothing. It is a number somebody typed. Checking it against the register is what turns it into evidence.
Three things: that the number exists on the register, that it is current rather than lapsed or suspended, and that the name recorded against it matches the doctor claiming it.
On Rounds this runs automatically against the NMC's public records when a doctor signs up, nationwide. A doctor can only accept work once it clears. Anything that does not clear automatically, a name recorded differently, a state whose records are not machine-readable, goes to a human reviewer rather than being refused outright.
A register check confirms that a registration is real and current. It does not confirm that the person holding the phone is the doctor it belongs to. That is a separate question, answered by an identity check, and the two should not be confused.
It also says nothing about competence or conduct beyond whether the registration is in good standing. A hospital taking on a locum is still the party responsible for deciding whether this doctor suits this work.
Rounds keeps the registration number, the result of checking it, and the doctor's registration certificate or ID when they upload it to be verified. Nothing else.
Documents that are collected have to be secured, retained lawfully, and disposed of. Under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, a platform should hold the least data that answers the question, and say plainly what it holds and why.
Every registration checked against NMC records. Zero commission, the hospital pays the doctor directly.
